South Yorkshire Credit Union

The main Credit Union in Doncaster is South Yorkshire Credit Union (formerly Danum Credit Union).

Credit Unions offer an easy way to save and financial services such as low-cost loans.

Credit Unions are not-for-profit organisations and are owned and controlled by their members. The Credit Union decides who can become a member. This may be based on where someone lives or works. For example, members of a credit union will often live in the same area. This is called the common bond. To join South Yorkshire Credit Union, you must live or work in the Dearne Valley, Barnsley or Doncaster Borough.

Good features of Credit Unions.

• It’s much easier to open a Credit Union account than a bank or building society account
• You can save as much or as little as you like and as often as you like
• It’s easy to save at local collection points or direct from your wages
• You’ll get free life assurance
• South Yorkshire Credit Union offers a % gross dividend instead of interest on savings
• Credit Unions offer low cost loans to their members
• If the Credit Union goes bust you will be able to get most or all of your money back.

In addition, South Yorkshire Credit Union has branches in Stainforth, Doncaster, and Denaby. There are also many collection points throughout Doncaster including at Armthorpe, Askern, Balby, Campsall, Carcroft, Conisbrough, Dunscroft, Edlington, Hexthorpe, Hyde Park, Intake, Mexborough, Moorends, Thorne and Woodlands.

SYCU hope to open more Collection Points throughout the year.

What else does South Yorkshire Credit Union offer?

• Savings accounts – these do not pay interest, but may pay a dividend. For this reason, they can be used by Muslims as this does not breach Sharia law.
Christmas Club – visit our 'How to pay for Christmas' page to find out more about the benefits of saving with South Yorkshire Credit Union for Christmas.
Affordable loans – the interest rate is 25.36% APR. Members on benefit need to have a benefit paid into their Credit Union account. Members not on benefits have a standing order from their bank paid into their account.
