Unspent Convictions

Insurance for people with unspent convictions

You need insurance to ride a motorbike or drive a car. You may also wish to cover the contents of your home to protect against the worst happening. However, if you or someone living in your home has unspent convictions, many insurance companies will not cover you.

If you fail to declare that some with an unspent conviction resides in your home, your insurance will be invalid and any claim will be refused. However it is still possible to get insurance that covers people with unspent convictions.

Find out more about Insurance and Convictions on the Unlock website.

What is an unspent conviction?

This Rehabilitation of Offenders Act tells you whether you have to declare a conviction when applying for insurance.
All sentences have ‘rehabilitation periods’ which start from the date of conviction.
The conviction will only be spent when this period has finished.
If the offender was under 18 when convicted, the period is halved.
